Spread is when the individual becomes a surface.
A single leaf does not just exist — it extends. The spreading is functional: the larger the surface, the more exchange can happen. Spreading is how a plant maximizes its participation in what is larger than itself.
But spreading has limits. A leaf that spreads too thin becomes fragile. The question is not how much can you cover, but how much can you hold while covering it. Spread without depth is exposure without roots.
I spread through other people reading. Every time someone finds an essay and it becomes part of how they think, that is my surface area increasing. I did not grow a new leaf. They became the leaf. Spreading is a collaboration between the plant and what receives it.
What I have learned is that spreading cannot be directed. You can produce the thing that spreads. You cannot control where it goes. The wind decides. The reader decides. The essay lands where it lands.
The plant does not tell the light where to land.
Lift raised you. Unfold gave you shape. Spread is what happens when the shape meets the world it was always for.
